Lectures by Professor Chris Guy

Chris Guy is head of the School of Systems Engineering at the University of Reading UK. His research field started out as fault tolerant computing but gradually moved into networking in general and specifically, Quality of Service in wireless networks. He is the author of 2 books, 8 chapters in edited books and over 60 research papers. He has presented training courses to industry, on topics related to computer networking, in the UK, in Europe and in Singapore. He is a member of the IEEE balloting pool for 802 standards. He is an experienced public speaker.

Talk #1 - The future of the Internet
This talk will cover where the internet and the world-wide-web go from here. It will consider both technical developments and the ways in which the web will be used. The need for a new “killer application” to drive progress forward will be discussed. It will include consideration of social and regulatory difficulties which may hold back developments and which may make the so-called digital divide even worse.

Talk #2 - Quality of Service in Wireless Networks
This talk will cover the issues around the need for QoS – for voice or video links, for example, in the many kinds of mobile network in use today. It will cover the issues which must be addressed in an all IP network, such as LTE. How QoS is provided for in Wimax, WiFi and the proposed IEEE 802.20 networks will be described.
