On 20th of November, Dava Newman presented in Instituto Superior Técnico NASA’s Mission to Mars, the next giant leap for humanity. Miss Newman explained how engineers and scientists around the world are working hard to develop the technologies astronauts will use to one day live and work on Mars, and safely return home. This lecture, recorded by IEEE-IST TV, was a collaboration between IST/ACorner (protocol between US Embassy and Instituto Superior Técnico) and IEEE-IST Student Branch. You can watch it on our YouTube channel (video).
Dava Newman is Apollo Professor of Astronautics and Engineering Systems - MIT. Her renown investigation in extravehicular activity and biomechanics assured, in 2007, the distinction of “Best Inventor” by Time Magazine, because of BioSuit™ system, an advanced space suit that allows the astronaut a better locomotion. Some of her techniques are being used in children with cerebral palsy, to help them to develop some motor control and to perform daily activities. Late last year, Dava Newman was appointed by US President Barack Obama, as NASA Deputy Administrator, a position she holds since May 2015.
